2009 Tessuti Awards

Tessuti Fabrics, that treasure trove of designer silks, wools, linen, cottons and blends from the great fabric houses of the world, has watched the creativity and craftmanship of its many customers grow over the years.

We are continually blown away by many of the garments designed and made by our customers, so we'd like to take the opportunity to publicly recognise the design skills and ingenuity of people who pursue fashion just for the love of it. There are plenty of awards for designers and manufacturers already working in the fashion industry, but Tessuti wants to recognise the up and coming young designers and the individual talents and clever creations of 'home couture'.

* The Tessuti Awards is an annual event, first held in 2007.
* 2009 Tessuti Awards will be held on Wednesday 2nd of September starting at 6:30pm.
* Registration to enter opens August 10 and closes August 28.
* There will be 2 categories; Vintage Little Black Dress & Smart Day/Evening Wear.
* Both categories are open to Tessuti customers, both young and old, male and female, fashion students and all sewers.

Winning entrant will score themselves and a friend a return trip to the awards night in Sydney, including automatic entry into the finals competition of the Tessuti Awards. Tessuti Awards will be held at ESMOD Australia, 2 Short Street, Surry Hills, on Wednesday the 2nd of September 2009, from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. Judging will commence at 7pm.

  1. Why are only size 10 garments eligible?

I don't wear a size 10. Why would I bother spending hours designing and constructing a dress that I can't wear?

I think this alienates a lot of the Tessuti clientele, since many home sewers sew because they aren't a standard size 10 and can't find commercial clothes that fit well.

I would enter the contest in a heartbeat if this rule were removed. I would like to hear why it is in place.

  2. Dear Anonymous,

We have 2 categories to enter, the size 10 restriction only applies in the LBD category, as this makes it an even playing field for judging purposes. You can enter this category if you wish and have a model of your choice wear your garment.

That is also the reason we have created the other category - so that all can enter.

We never intended to alienate anyone. Since the first award, participants feedback suggested that if all garments were made in one size it made the competition more even as alot of the participants felt they couldn't compete with the fashion students.

I hope that answers your question and we hope to see you on the night, it's a fantastic opportunity to spend a fun night surrounded by like-minded and creative sewers.
