Party frocks

So we've posted about the Melbourne Christmas dinner but would you like to see our frocks?

After spotting this blog post way back in Oct 2009, I stalked every vintage pattern seller until I finally found one on eBay a few months back. Vintage Vogue 7164.

After angst-ing over what fabric to make it up in, I then combined that angst with my what-am-I-going-to-make-for-the-Christmas-party angst and then after I added my mandatory pre-Christmas when-the-hell-am-I-going-to-get-time-to-make-something angst, I finally pulled my proverbial together and finished it with - I kid you not -twenty minutes to spare before I was out the door.

The fabric is another beautiful tie-dyed linen (sold out) that I wanted to make up into a simple garment with clean lines, and this pattern fit the bill perfectly. As is the way with most vintage patterns - and in combo with my limited height - I had to take quite a bit off the length. But what I love most of all about the dress is the in-seam pockets.

Here's Nichola's dress made up in our Emperor's Garden (more pics and details here)...

And the lovely Leisl in another version of Vogue 8387 (OOP)....

And our newest staff member, Evelyne, in Simplicity 2588 (more details here)...

And I'd really like to show you a pic of Hannah's skirt made up in our Mustard Pea Soup silk...

....but she's unpicked it in preparation for a new project. Stay tuned for that one.

See y'all in 2011!

Pattern Review - Vogue 8028

Here's one of those patterns that you might never look twice at until it walks through the door. Which it fortunately did, on a regular Melbourne customer. It's Vogue 8028, view A, but with short sleeves.

The fabric is our linen/viscose Black Check (remember Colette's sundress?)

We're often asked to recommend shirt dress patterns, so this one's definitely going in the memory bank...

Pattern Review - Vogue 8602 (view C)

Nasrin been at it again! Whipping up these two fabulous skirts in View C from Vogue 8602, only shorter than the pattern suggests and with a wider hem.

The skirt at very top is in our Italian 100% Linen 'Black Stain' and the green floral version, a printed Italian Cotton. With stunning fabrics like these, a simple classic pattern is all that's needed, says Nasrin...we agree!

Pattern Review - Vogue 8380

Sorry - it's not the best photo but when technology fails and you've got to post, then you've just got to post. Meet my mate Kate. Even in her headless and footless state, she's still looking pretty good in tres facile Vogue 8380 (View A).
The fabric is our linen/viscose Wine Patch and the strap/tie a silk satin. When I asked if she had any pattern tips or recommendations she said "although I would normally consider myself about a 10, on making a practice version I realised I was actually a size 12. Definitely worth doing the muslin! And the fabric is beautiful!!".

Yes, my friend is clever AND kind.

If you're keen on seeing View B made up, check out Leisl's version here...

Pattern Review - Simplicity 3877 without godets

Here's another finished garment made in last Saturday's Sew Inn class. This easy and perfect summer dress - Simplicity 3877 - was made by Margaret in our Italian 100% cotton lawn 'Etro Bluebells' (sold out)

Margaret chose View D but didn't want the fullness in the skirt created by eight godets! Instead, Georgia showed her how to eliminate them from the pattern which created a simpler a-line skirt and eliminated a lot of sewing fuss. The only other alteration made was to lengthen the bodice to accommodate Margaret's longer torso.

I must say I prefer this style without the godets. What do you think? I'm pretty sure Margaret was also thrilled with the end result. How could I tell? In no time Margaret was slipping into it and wearing it out the door! Now any sewer knows that's a very good sign.

Note: Here's a handy tutorial if you like the added fullness created by godets.

Pattern Review - Vogue 8295

We had our last Sew Inn classes for 2010 in Tessuti Surry Hills last Saturday. It was a great end to a fabulous term and we'll be updating the website with the new dates for 2011 Term 1 very soon.

In the meantime here's a sneek peek at this pretty skirt made by Sew Inn regular Marita. The pattern used for this circular skirt is Vogue 8295 made up in our Japanese Cotton Edo Garden Red.

Sew Inn teacher, Georgia had Marita make up a calico muslin of the yoke before cutting it out in her chosen fabric. Georgia knew that there were some fit issues with the yoke piece in this pattern - take note if you consider making it. View D skirt was used and instead of a contrast hem, Marita opted to cut the band in the self fabric. The length of skirt is just perfect as are these Melissa 'Sweet Lip' flaties. Think I'd love a pair of these for Xmas!

Victoria's Patchwork Tunic

Haven't we all got left over bits of fabric, many precious but useless left over scraps after cutting out our sewing projects?

Here's a fabulous idea created by Victoria - a winner in the Frock Up In Colour category, in this year's Tessuti Awards.

Using left-over bits of linen and Japanese cotton Imazu Cherry Flowers, Victoria made up this simple, but striking two-tone linen tunic dress! The top and bottom half of the tunic were sewn together and then the desired contrast and printed pieces were viesoflixed on, using normal polyester sewing thread, edge stitched around the pieces using an embroidery blanket stitch setting. I absolutely love this idea, it's got me thinking about endless possibilities and the scraps that got away...
