Guilty.

This morning, I read an article by Amanda Hooton in The Good Weekend. Called Dark Arts (I'd link to it, but alas can't find a copy online), it refers to the 'dangerous business of craft'. It tells the tale of the author and her project, her haste, and the resulting disaster involving one needle and one finger. Say no more. But this paragraph did make me laugh...

Hands up if you've been there, done that?

Yup, guilty.

NEW Modification of a Commercial Pattern Classes @ Tessuti Surry Hills

Want to improve your skills fitting and adapting commercial patterns? Now you can learn all the tricks of the trade from a professional.
Your teacher Megan has over 20 yrs specialist pattern making experience, from mainstream to high end fashion.
She will guide you through the complexities of your chosen pattern design and give you the confidence to tackle any challenge.
For all home sewers (not for absolute beginners) wanting to develop patternmaking skills, come and enjoy this relaxed, informative and interactive class.

Modification of a Commercial Pattern
If you are able to sew your own garments but experience frustration with producing ill-fitting garments this workshop will enable you to adjust a bodice or dress pattern to fit exactly (no pants or jackets at this time). To prepare for the workshop you will need to cut out your pattern (perhaps it will be one that you have previously used and know that it needs some work). If in doubt, make sure the size you cut is too big rather than too small. Cut a calico (or scrap fabric) garment from this pattern. Do not cut pockets, or facings but you may cut one sleeve and bring the entire pattern to the workshop. Sew the calico together using a big stitch and even a contrasting thread so that seams can be unpicked quickly if necessary. Please be aware that the fitting of your calico will take place in the shop during business hours and ensure that you wear a close fitting t-shirt and leggings if your calico won’t cover as much as you would like. As well as your calico and pattern you will need pins, measuring tape, ruler (french curve rulers are great), a sharp pencil, eraser, paper scissors, fabric scissors, magic or sticky tape, needle and thread. If you have a grading ruler, tracing wheel or coloured texta pens these can also be helpful.

Sweet Liberty bloomers

Last month, I received a lovely email from Anna. I'd helped her to select some Liberty fabrics to make these gorgeous bloomers for her niece and she very kindly sent these pics to show me the final product. Here are the details...

Pattern – "Baby Bloomers" (size 12-18mth) from Making Children's Clothes by Emma Hardy

Main Fabric - Mauvey Pink Lawn Tana Lawn (available in Melb)

Co-ordinating Lining Fabric – Another seasonal Liberty print (sold out)

Notions – Jumbo Cream Ric Rac (available all stores)

Changes – I used a 1 inch (25cm) bias tape maker to assist with the construction of the coordinating waistband lining. I used a total of 20 inches of elastic for the leg openings (the pattern suggested 26 inches)

Ah, the sweetness that is a little girl in Liberty. Thanks Anna!

Pattern Reviews - McCalls 6035 and McCalls 5633

I'm finally back to my weekly sewing classes with Bernadette again, I can't tell you how much I missed those selfish two hours to myself!!! Don't think that it'll be enough though, as my 'to sew list' has grown considerably thanks to Pinterest!
As for Bernadette, well she was far to0 busy to miss us too much as she managed to get some free time (at last!) to whip up some new summer clothes for herself. Here's Bernadette's princess seam blouse made from McCalls 6035 (view A but with the shirt collar B) in pretty Liberty Of London Wiltshire Cranberry plus these Bermuda shorts made up in Stretch Cotton - Burnt Orange and pattern McCalls 5663 ( similar also to McCalls 5391). With the shorts Bernadette eliminated the fly front adding an invisible zipper to the back as well as leaving off the belt tabs and cuffs.
And of course not forgetting our Valentine's giveaway of 1.50mtrs of Red Love Hearts jersey! We had a fabulous response, thank you again for all of your comments. Congratulations Suzy! Please email me at fabrics@tessuti.com.au with your postal address and we will get your jersey posted to you right away.

Tricia and Black Hana Gurrido - Winners On The Field!

BRIGHT, vibrant colours were the order of the day in this year's Hobart Cup Fashions on the Field. Winner Tricia Molachino, from Townsville, wowed the judges in a fluoro pink, retro-inspired outfit. A veteran of the catwalk, Mrs Molachino has entered Fashions on the Field in Queensland a number of times and last year won an event in New Zealand."I like the Carnaby look at the moment, with the big collars and the '70s prints and I wanted to add some colour," she said. "I'm wearing a Camilla and Marc dress and the jacket was made by a friend with some '70s print fabric, and the headwear is by Louise McDonald."

Congratulations Tricia! Notably, Tricia also won 2nd runner up with a beautiful mod style dress in the same fabric for the Magic Millions Fashions On The Field on the Gold Coast.

If you 're interested, we've got a very small amount remaining at both our Chatswood and Surry Hills stores.

Neapolitan Bespoke Tailors

O'MAST from Kid Dandy on Vimeo.

Thank you to Sue from Perth, who shared this link over on our Tessuti Fabrics page on Facebook today.

I just had to share this with everyone, it's a wonderful look into Neapolitan tailoring traditions and the skill and passion of these talented men. I'd love to be their apprentice/trainee.

My favourite quote in this 'There is no craft that you can make without passion'

Enjoy!

Timmmmber!

Just literally minutes ago, this gumtree branch came down landing smack in front of Tessuti Surry Hills store narrowly missing pedestrians and Gregs van, as he was in the process of backing out of the loading dock!

Happy to report that no one was hurt.

Pattern Review - Vogue 8714 *Modified

Georgia's latest sewing creation is this cropped jacket made up in our Taupe & White cotton/elastane 'Penguin Stripe'.

The pattern used is Vogue 8714 View C, *minus the lower peplum and with a mandarin collar added to the neckline. The jacket is unlined, however Georgia bound the seams with our Mokuba cotton twill tape in Chalk Grey, available at Tessuti Chatswood and Melbourne.

It's a great pattern if you want to have a go at making a jacket.
