Pattern Review - (more) Simplicity 2444 in Arrowhead Rainbow Ponti

Here it is! Georgia's new dress, it's another version of pattern Simplicity 2444 made up in our striking Italian printed ponti knit 'Arrowhead Rainbow - Ponti' (sold out). This time Georgia sewed the darts further leaving just a small pleat at the top as well as adding self binding to the neckline and eliminating the back zip as the ponti knit has sufficient stretch to pull on without an opening! For an ideal winter dress three quarter sleeves were added, with an inverted pleat added to the sleeve head (instead of soft gathers as per pattern) as well as a cuff detail to the hem!

For more printed ponti's check out Diamond Mauve and Cat Prowl.

Pattern Review - Vogue 8299 *modified

I met up with Georgia today to photograph her latest creation and the morning's weather was going to determine what I was going to find Georgia wearing for this pattern review! If the fine sunny weather held up I was going to see her latest dress (made up in another lovely Italian printed ponti) and if the weather was as bleak and cold as predicted (and it was!) Georgia was going to wear her newly finished jacket.

Georgia made up our beautiful Italian Wool Blend Boucle Tweed in Water Curl (available at Tessuti Surry Hills only) also available in Night Curl, see below (at Tessuti Chatswood only).

View B (Small) from OOP Vogue 8299 was used, but with some *modifications. As Georgia didn't want her jacket to sit right on her waist (or above) she extended the pattern down to hip length as well as grading it out to cover the hip area. She altered the line of the jacket by shaping the bottom fronts on a diagonal. I really think that this new silhouette compliments the collar style best. Lastly instead of buttons/buttonholes Georgia used our large 25mm fashion press studs for a more updated look.

Pattern Review - Cap Sleeve Shift Dress in Overview New York Ponti Knit

Ponti knits are so hot right now, a thick double knit with just the right amount of stretch (but not too much) and weight not to cling. This wonderful knit is also ideal for patterns usually suitable for wovens, and works particularly well in dresses, slim/circular skirts, jackets, pants and jeans (yes jeans!) etc.

Lenka's been a very busy bee, preparing her travelling wardrobe for her trip back home to Slovakia for her sister's upcoming wedding!  Lenka wore into work one of her latest creations, a lovely shift dress with boat neck and cap sleeves made up in our Italian digitally ponti knit Overview New York (sold out) and Burdastyle pattern #130 from magazine issue 1/2010. Lenka says she graded the pattern down two sizes from the smallest 36 as the pattern was too wide for her and eliminated the centre back seam and zipper (this one pulls easily over the head due to the wide neckline and the ponti stretch) as well as self lining the capped sleeves.

A stylish travel dress and perfect marriage of fabric and pattern don't you think?

'FREDDIE VEST' Sewing Class @ Tessuti Melbourne - Saturday 7th July (11am-4pm)

THE MAKERS JOURNAL are two Melbourne designers producing a beautiful new collection of sassy and girly sewing patterns.  We will soon be stocking some instore and online, and to celebrate the launch Jo and Pamela will be hosting a FREDDIE VEST sewing class.  The design for the vest was inspired by the great Freddie Mercury and is cut to sit high in the back with a lower relaxed front.

The girls will begin with an introduction and review of the different ways you can trim your vest.   It looks particularly good when you combine different textures, colours and prints together.  If you'd like some assistance with fabric selection they will be on hand an hour before the class begins to help out. Be warned though...they love to mix things up!
This class is best suited to sewers with an intermediate to advanced skill level and includes laying out the pattern and cutting your fabric, straight stitching, topstitching, working with elastic and ribbons, making tucks and casings, gathering, bagging out and hand sewing. The vest combines interesting pattern shapes with lots of different techniques and you're sure to pick up a few tips from the girls along the way.  Each step will be demonstrated and they will then be on hand to guide you as you complete your project.

The pattern comes in sizes 8-14 and is included in the total cost of the class ($100). Body measurements are listed below:

                                               Size 8     Size 10    Size 12    Size 14
Bust                                        81cm       86cm       91cm       96cm

Tessuti will offer a 15% discount on fabric and other notions purchased in store on the day of your vest-making class. Below is a list of what you'll need to bring/purchase:

Adrian: Relieved

Such fun folks! Adrian had a ball searching through the suggested names. But we have a winner and this fabric shall henceforth be known as Jumping Jacks! Congratulations sampling. Please email us at fabrics@tessuti.com.au with your postal address.

Thanks to all who played along and left suggestions. It was very inspiring and (in some cases, amusing) and we look forward to doing it again soon.

'Some of my worst mistakes, are my best creations'

I love this phrase Julie (Bernina Chatswood) used - 'some of my worst mistakes are my best creations' when describing this top she made recently in our striped viscose/elastane jersey Black & White Wally.

According to Julie this top started out in Kwiksew 3720 pattern. Julie cut the top out with the stripes on the diagonal, but when the top was complete Julie was disappointed with the end result!

Not letting this stop her from creating a truly fabulous top, Julie then recut and reshaped the front and back, changed the sleeves making one set in and leaving the other extended at the top and added a seam to them almost half way down where she joined a fitted sleeve to the bottom creating a lovely effect with stripe direction.

Julie scooped the neckline lower and utilised any left over fabric to create a funnel cowl, cutting and join the stripes in different directions. A Bernina walking foot was used on her machine to help match up the stripes when sewing and finishing off with lovely twin needle finish on the sleeves and bottom hem. This top is really striking and testament that a little perseverance goes a long way!

Visit Julie and the Bernina team on 166 Victoria Ave, Chatswood - ph:02 94117500 .

They're a helpful and friendly bunch, always providing lots of helpful and informative sewing advice. Owner/technician George O'Keefe offers the best service/repair price on your sewing or overlocker machine. You can also join their Bernina Club , here you'll enjoy discounts on products, watch demonstrations on sewing techniques etc plus I highly recommend you book into some of their classes, in particular their overlocking workshop...a must!

NOTE (to my family as well!): Bernina Chatswood is offering discounts on some of their products for Mothers Day.

Help Adrian

Meet Adrian, our Warehouse Manager. Amongst other roles and responsibilities, he's charged with the task of naming our fabrics. Cool job, huh? But when you've named over 100,000 fabrics over the years (and years), the well of inspiration can run a bit dry. And when you stare at a plain black fabric and the only words that spring to mind are 'Black' and 'Night', you know you need help. And so, dear readers, we're pleased to introduce a new and regular blog feature - Help Adrian.

Can you come up with a great name for the 100% cotton print pictured above? It's perfect for tops, blouses, dresses, skirts, contrast lining in coats/jackets. If we choose your suggestion, not only do you have naming (and therefore bragging) rights, you'll also receive two metres of this fabric.

Comments will close 11:59pm Sunday May 6th AEST.

Get clever, help Adrian and good luck!
