Large Attack Dots Twist Top

Just had to share this stylish outfit worn by a Surry Hills regular, Lorraine. The top seen here is made up in our Viscose/Elastane jersey Large Attack Dots. Lorraine drafted the pattern from a favourite store bought top. The pattern is simply a rectangular piece with two arhmoles cut out to sew in sleeves, there are no side seams, the edges are sewn and caught together just off centre front with a twist and a knot at the neck. If you look closely you can see that Lorraine has left the selvedge edge on the fabric as a feature!

So clever and styled beautifully.

Belinda's Mia Tunic

I'm excited! I just received this email and photo from Belinda. Our first ever pattern review for the Mia Tunic pattern.

Hi Colette
I have finished the Mia tunic and I couldn't be more thrilled!
For my first try I used an inexpensive linen I picked up here in Singapore but next up will be one of the Liberty prints I bought from Tessuti earlier in the year.
The pattern is really well illustrated and instructions so clear that I didn't need to unpick a stitch!
Thank you for a great pattern!

regards
Belinda

Sweet 16

We celebrated a very special birthday today on 12.12.12, Gabby turned sweet 16!  My gift to her was this scrap quilt (a combination of 1930's reproduction and current printed cottons) I started for her some years ago. I'm embarrassed to say how long ago I started this, but let's just say Gabby had given up all hope that I was ever going to finish it and was both surprised and thrilled to receive it this morning!!!  I hope she'll treasure for many many years to come.

For her special day Gabby wore this dress she last made at her sewing classes with Bernadette. This incredibly beautiful deep red printed vintage cotton chintz was a 4 metre remnant length we picked up at a local garage sale of a former fabric lover, who was moving into a nursing home!

The dress pattern used was New Look 6824 , bodice view B was cut together with skirt view H, but instead of pleating the skirt as per pattern it was gathered onto the bodice. Due to the fabric being narrow (only 90cm wide) the skirt is narrower than the pattern, but it still works in this coated cotton.

Happy birthday gorgeous Gabby, hope your day was extra special xxx

Sew Inn (Melbourne) - new class details

Further to yesterday's blog post announcing our 2013 Sew Inn dates, I wanted to give you some more detailed info on two new classes that we're holding for the first time in our Melbourne store.

------------------------

Modification of a Commercial PANT Pattern
Please note sewing knowledge is required. This class is NOT SUITABLE for beginners.

In this class your pants will be fitted to your body and then you will learn how to make a new, more well fitted pattern.

                                           BEFORE

AFTER

To prepare for this class you will need to cut and sew a calico from your pattern. If you are in doubt make sure that the size is too big rather than too small. It can be a good idea to cut pants with an extra large sideseam (5cm). Mark clearly on your pattern if you have added to the seam allowance.
Cut only the outer (shell) of your garment, no need to put in the zip or pockets unless the pockets form part of the shell. Bring your complete pattern to the class. Prior to your class, you will need to sew the calico together using a big stitch and even a contrasting thread so that seams can be unpicked if necessary.

------------------------

Fitting Friends - ($160 for two participants - minimum 3 pairs in this class - 6 students total)
Please note sewing knowledge is required. This class is NOT SUITABLE for beginners.

Very few people are a standard size. When sewing for yourself it is liberating to be able to make garments which fit your exact body shape. The secret of producing a well fitted garment lies in working with a calico to establish the correct shape on the body and then knowing how to put the fitting alterations onto the pattern.

Unfortunately it is difficult, or often impossible, to fit yourself. If you are lucky enough to have a friend who is also interested in making garments which fit well, you can learn to fit each other and have an ongoing fitting friendship! This class is designed for groups of two, who will enroll together and learn to fit each other.

You will each develop skills which can be utilized in conjunction with the pattern modification skills and will enable you to seriously improve the fit of your garments.

------------------------

If you have any questions about our classes, please do not hesitate to email us.
Please note that due to limited spaces, all bookings are final and cancellations will result in forfeit of payment. Bookings are not transferable to other class dates.

Libby (from Ballina) emailed me images of these great dresses she made up in our Japanese 100% Cotton Pink Ane and Liberty of London Red Chrysanthemum (sold out). This simple and stylish dress pattern is her own creation, it's just front and back pieces with drawstring neckline and stitched down pockets. Mia Tunic Pattern!

Here it is just in time for summer! Our latest Tessuti pattern Mia Tunic is loose fitting, relaxed and comfortable and perfect as a cool summer tunic top or dress. It also makes a great pull-on cover up for the beach.

The image above shows the unpleated yoke version (suitable for all sewing levels) of the tunic, cut shorter to a top/blouse length. It's  made up in our Japanese cotton Poppy Seed Snow. The finished length is 69cm (from centre back) and it features a 4.5cm wide hem.

The image above shows the pleated yoke version (recommended for advanced sewers).  I made this up in Japanese 100% cotton Yama Ebony Flower (available at Tessuti Chatswood only). The finished length of the pattern is 79cm with a hem allowance of 3.2cm.

Our Mia Tunic pattern comes with all sizes including XS, S, M and L. Note: Seam allowances are included in the pattern as well as clear sewing instructions/photos. The pattern is best suited for soft cottons, light weight linen and Liberty Of London tana lawn.

For a limited time only, The Mia Tunic pattern is available to purchase in hardcopy version here. Or, if you prefer to download a print-at-home or print copy shop version for just $10, you can purchase your copy here.

Stainglass Garden Pants

Had to share another fabulous pair of pants made by Lenka in Italian Cotton/Elastane Pique 'Stainglass Garden'.  This lovely cotton is still available at Tessuti Chatswood.

Otga's 'Diamond City' Jacket (and our giveaway winner!)

Ah Otga, she's done it again. Here she is in a simple, cropped, raglan-sleeved jacket made up in our Diamond City. The pattern is her very own and a classic style if ever I saw one. She finished her seams using a Hong Kong binding method, which she said was time consuming but clearly well worth the effort.

Unfortunately, this fabric is now sold out but Melbourne has a small amount remaining in a different colourway and design - Italian Origami.

------------------------

PS Many thanks to everyone who entered our 5th Birthday Giveaway. It seems that many of you, like us, are wishing for more time to sew 2013. Oh but if only Tessuti could sell sewing-time...

Anyhoo, without further ado our randomly chosen giveaway winner is Belinda who is going to "FINALLY crack open my Japanese pattern books" in the new year. Congrats Belinda. Please email us at fabrics@tessuti.com.au with your postal address and pattern choice and we'll be sending you a nice, early Christmas gift!

2012 Tessuti Sydney Christmas Dinner @ A Tavola

This year, we celebrated Christmas and the end of a busy year with our wonderful Sydney crew at A Tavola in Darlinghurst. A fabulous night! See more photos of the night and as well as some gorgeous Tessuti creations on our Tessuti Flickr page.

Instead of the customary frock, this year I opted for a lace top and shorts. I made this lovely French citrus/black corded lace (still available at Tessuti Surry Hills) top using the Gabby Dress pattern. I made a size smaller than my usual small and when shortening the length for the top, I wanted to keep the flare at the hem so had to reattach the scalloped edge of the lace at the hem and cap sleeves by french seaming the scalloping around the edges (as done here). The scalloped edge around the neckline was attached together with a black silk habutai I used to line the body.

I used a drapey black silk faille (available at all stores) for these fun flared shorts. The design was modified from the Chloe Pant pattern. After shortening to the desired length, I then added more flare to the hemline (by converting the dart to hemline flare). The back dart was bigger so it added the perfect amount of flare to the hemline, but the front dart was smaller so I had to pivot in more flare to the front to balance the back. At the waistline, instead of a facing, I added a narrow binding instead. I LOVE them, they're so breezey and comfy!

PS. There's still time to enter our birthday blog giveaway. You have until Monday 3rd Dec, 11:59pm AEST to leave a comment.
