Carla's Formal Butterfly Dress

I'll always remember the day Carla came into Tessuti Chatswood along with her mum Josie, to find fabric suitable to recreate this dress (below worn by Selena Gomez) for her formal dress late last year! Such a sweet young lady, it was a real pleasure to help advise and to make her dream dress a reality.

Our Italian 100% Silk Chiffon 'Butterfly Wing' Panelled Digital Print (sold out) was perfect for this dress, together with an ivory silk organza for the under skirt. Talented dressmaker Bernadette Doherty did the rest, pretty stunning result don't you think?

Block Fusing is the best!

When it comes to starting a new sewing project, I enjoy the cutting process ( I really do!) and of course sitting at my machine to start sewing. But the bit I find truly tedious is ironing the fiddly interfacing pieces to the (just as fiddly) fabric facings. In fact fusing waistbands, collars, cuffs is laboring!!! I'm sure you know what I mean?

A well known method used in the garment industry regarding interfacing is block fusing. When ironing interfacing to fabrics, the fabrics can shrink as a result, in particular woolens, cottons, viscose etc. So interfacing the fabric set aside for the facings, waistbands etc before cutting out is not only essential but makes this process quick and easy!

See why, in this example I'm going to show you a pair of pants I cut out recently in Vintage Wash Navy Linen and how I block fused the waistband facings.

When laying out my pattern to the fabric, I marked out my facings as per usual but instead of cutting them out of the fabric I cut around the facing shapes allowing approx 2cm around ( incase there is any shrinkage after fusing) so that my facings still fit after the fusing process. *I've marked mine out in fabric tailors chalk as my pattern is in cardboard,but you can pin your tissue pattern to the fabric, cut around the outer of these shapes and then remove.

Apologies, I wasn't as approx around my pieces!

I then placed the folded fabric piece over my folded interfacing, pinned in place and then cut around the fabric shape.

I then ironed on the interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric.

Once the fabric had been fused, I refolded my piece and lay out the facing pieces back on the fold, pinned in place and then cut out. *In my example you can see here that when I re-chalked around the facing pieces the linen had shrunk a little.

Et voila....now you have your interfaced facings! The same size as your original pattern piece. How easy is that?

Blockfusing is the answer!

Amber Samba Viscose Dress

Here's a look at the stunning dress Georgia made up for our Christmas party last month. The dress is a wonderful creation from a combination of two Vogue patterns made up in our drapey 100% Viscose Crepe Amber Samba (sold out). Vogue 8032 (view A) formed the bodice of the dress and Vogue 8232 for the skirt.

From V8032 - Georgia cut out the front and back of view A to the waist marker. Trimming off the seam allowance around the armholes and binding them in the self fabric. Because the body of the bodice was very long resulting in low armholes, Georgia came up with an idea to pull up the bodice by turning down the top of the neck front and back, then gathering the neckline and attaching the neck tie to the top, forming a pretty ruffle detail to the neck!

To remove excess at the waist, Georgia gathered the centre front and back leaving 10cm either side of the gathering, then attaching the skirt which is cut from V8232. For easy access a 35cm invisible zipper was sewn under the armhole. The dress was left to hang overnight to allow the skirt to drop, before levelling the hemline before sewing a narrow double 1/4 inch hem.

...but a magical fabric helps too. Winged Convention - an Alexander McQueen 100% cotton - sold out in a flash.

I didn't use a pattern for this skirt. It's just a simple front and back, gathered, with an elastic cased in the band running across the back.

Meet Otga. She first came into our Melbourne store just a couple of months ago as a novice sewer. We talked fabrics, sewing with knits and making a tube skirt. Fast forward eight or so weeks and - my oh my - this lady has talent, style and a real eye for fabric and design. Once I worked my way past the distraction that were her divine Celine shoes...

...I managed to photograph her simple long-sleeved dress made up in Pucci's Candied Leadlight (100% Viscose jersey - available in all stores).

I suspect you may be seeing a lot more of Otga and her fabulous creations in the not too distant future.

Charlotte's Vogue 1207 in Dolce Purple Strike

Here's the dress Charlotte made for our Christmas Party last month, remember I didn't get around to taking photos! The pattern used was Vogue 1207 and the fabric is our printed Italian 100% Silk Jacquard Dolce Purple Strike.

Lovely sleeve detail

Due to the deep V neckline at the back, wearing a bra is a problem so instead of raising the neckline Charlotte simply added a tab across the back, to cover the bra strap. The tab also helps to keep the shoulders in place, to keep them from slipping off the shoulders due to the combination of wide neckline and deep V back! Clever solution!

Pattern Review - Vintage Simplicity 6731

My daughter's other Design and Technology project last year was a 60's or 70's inspired dress. It's already been worn out and about quite a bit. Gabby knew that she wanted it in red and picked out our sandwashed red silk/linen and this vintage Simplicity 6731 pattern, a loan from a kind friend with an enviable vintage pattern collection.

How sizings have changed since the 60's! This Miss size 14 was perfect for today's size 10 measurements and the only alterations made to the pattern was to shorten the sleeves and to change the way the bib yoke was applied. The pattern calls for the bib yoke to be made so that it's detachable, so instead the outer bib piece was edged with a gathered embroidery anglaise trim (available at Tessuti) and sewn into place on the front dress and of course it was shortened some more!. The white flower shaped buttons finish it off nicely.

I really hope Gabby keeps up her sewing this year, as she's learning it's well worth all of the time and patience!

Mission Maxi Modified

I do love me a frock, especially in summer time. I've been struggling to find a maxi pattern that suits me because most designs that I'm drawn to seem to suit the tall and small-busted, of which I am definitely neither. A few months back, I purchased Jamie Christina's Mission Maxi and it's a great design in addition to being super (super) quick and easy to make. I originally made up View A in a remnant from the stash...

... and then - inspired by something I saw in retail-world - decided to make it again with modifications. I left the top part as is because both the fit and the racer back are perfect. Then, from the underarm, I angled the pattern out and created a curved hem as seen below. I also shortened the length by a good 30cm at the hem's highest point.

I made two versions, the first (trial) in Dark Cat...

...and the second in In the Works (both sold out).

This year, Tessuti has carried our best range ever of printed jerseys and I don't normally do patterns more than once (same goes for books I read) but I can feel another one coming on.

An easy pattern that required no alteration and best of all it has a bodice pattern piece for bra cup sizes A,B,C and D ...fabulous!

Pattern Review - Simplicity 2444

Georgia has made up another fabulous ponti knit dress, this time in Italian digitally printed You Are Here in Simplicity 2444.

The sleeveless version was made with slight modifications such as raising the waistline seam, leaving the bodice darts open at the top, self binding added to the neckline and armholes and due to the stretch in the ponti, the back zip eliminated.

Due to the panel print (pattern repeat) being 81cm in length, for a dress longer than this, choosing a dress with a waist seam is necessary. By top and tailing the panel print Georgia has created a really gorgeous effect!

There is no doubt, Georgia is one clever lady!

Thanks for your comment on my blog - I've been meaning to send you pics of the Painapurra creations!
We call them the "Hawaiian Honeymoon" outfits.
I received the first lot of Painapurra with the aid of your gift voucher, then loved the texture & it's amazing retro look so much, decided Paul had to have a shirt too!

Each year we get together with other Thunderbird car owners for a Pancake Breakfast at nearby Floreat Beach. Our outfits were a hit!
My dress is retro Butterick 5603 and Paul's shirt is vintage Simplicity 2081 (a perfect match to his vintage Hawaiian shirt measurements).

Thanks again for the gorgeous fabric - it makes a striking statement

Pattern Review - McCalls 5796

This is Gabby's Design and Technology creation for school. The brief was an age appropriate garment for a child. Gabby chose McCalls 5796 to make a dress for her little cousin using a combination of cottons - Eyeballing Yellow and Liberty Of London Betsy - Tana Lawn

Gabby made up this dress as per pattern, the only alteration made was to the bodice. The bodice sat very wide on the body, so to bring it in (a great suggestion from her sewing tutor) Gabby added two pintucks to the centre front and then recut the bodice facing to fit. Little contrasting buttons were sewn down the centre front as well as back and embroidery anglaise trim around the hem to add lovely details.

Gabby was initially daunted with gathering all the tiers and making the straps neatly, but the extra sewing classes Gabby has been attending with Bernadette Doherty have been extremely helpful, not to mention enjoyable.

Using Japanese Patterns for Beginners

A class specifically aimed at helping students understand how to use the wonderful range of Japanese sewing pattern books currently available. Students bring their own project (book, fabric, tracing paper, highlighter pen, pencils and sewing things) and Suzie will help you locate and trace your pattern pieces and then interpret the diagrams in the book for construction. Students are welcome to begin at home if they feel confident and use the class to focus on whatever part of the process they are most concerned about. Students can email Suzie before the class or ask Tessuti staff if they need help in selecting a project or suitable fabric.

Sewing With Knits Without an Overlocker for Beginners

While an overlocker is an ideal tool for sewing knit fabrics, a home sewing machine can achieve great results with simple knits. This class is designed for those who may never have sewn with knits before and would like to start with simple projects such as T-shirts, jersey dresses, leggings or knit pants. Students need to bring their own pattern and fabric, or if the project is simple (such as a plain T-shirt) they may bring an existing garment to make a pattern from, along with pattern paper and drawing things. As there are a wide range of knit fabrics with very different properties (degree of stretch, drape, elastine content and so on) students should seek advice from Suzie or Tessuti staff prior to the class on fabric suitability, or purchase at Tessuti on the day.

Advanced class

This is an unstructured class in which you can receive advice and instruction to help you with any project. You will be able to tackle problems relating to garment details such as zips, collars, sleeves, bindings, casings, insertion of boning and anything else that presents difficulties in constructing the garments you want to make. Attending students should have some experience in sewing garments. Take advantage of the tailoring skills of your instructor who has teaching qualifications and 20 years experience in a made-to-measure workroom.

Modification of a Commercial Pattern

If you are able to sew your own garments but experience frustration with producing ill-fitting garments this workshop will enable you to adjust a bodice or dress pattern to fit exactly (no pants or sleeves this time). To prepare for the workshop you will need to cut out your pattern (perhaps it will be one that you have previously used and know that it needs some work). If in doubt, make sure the size you cut is too big rather than too small. Cut a calico (or scrap fabric) garment from this pattern. Do not cut pockets, facings or sleeves but bring the entire pattern to the workshop. Sew the calico together using a big stitch and even a contrasting thread so that seams can be unpicked quickly if necessary. Please be aware that the fitting of your calico will take place in the shop during business hours and ensure that you wear a close fitting t-shirt and leggings if your calico won’t cover as much as you would like. As well as your calico and pattern you will need pins, measuring tape, ruler, a sharp pencil, eraser, paper scissors, fabric scissors, magic or sticky tape, needle and thread. If you have a grading ruler, tracing wheel or coloured texta pens these can also be helpful.

This year we headed down to Five Ways Paddington for our Tessuti Sydney Christmas Party. Pre-dinner drinks at Christo's Bar and fabulous dinner across the road at L'Etoile. Once we relaxed with a few drinks, I forgot to take individual outfit shots and the all important group shot! However we managed to corner celebrity and executive chef, Manu Feildel for a few photo's.

Here's a striking sundress in one of our Italian digital printed stretch cottons - Into the Movement. Somehow this amazing collection hasn't been added to the online store. I'll be sure to add some photos soon.

This dress consists of a combination of patterns Vogue 8184 for the bodice and Simplicity 2588 for the skirt. Of course Georgia made sure to line up the outer pleats on the skirt with the princess seam line on the bodice!

Meet Tess. Prior to joining us in Melbourne as our newest staff member, she was quite partial to rolling around in not much at all. Not so now. She's very happy in her first outfit ever - Simplicity 3503 (View C) - made up in our Paisley Negative.

Being limbless and all, she needed some help in sewing it up so Nichola kindly offered her assistance (thanks Nic). And though she can be hard to read, I can assure you that Tess is very happy.

Pattern Review - Burdastyle 07/2011 - #116A

I've had this oversized top pattern , marked 'TO MAKE' ( I have a long list of those!) in my July/2011 issue of Burda Magazine.

Then I spotted lovely Lenka wearing this very top made up in Soft Grey Uru - Knit at work last week! If you like slightly looser and unstructured clothing then this pattern is fantastic, really flattering and super quick to make, says Lenka. As you can see on the Burdastyle website, this pattern looks great made up in a silk crepe de chine or cotton voile!

Pattern Review - Simplicity 2282 (and Happy Blog Birthday to us!)

Georgia whipped up this red/ivory spotted A-line dress in our latest arrival - Yacht Spot Jacquard - Red using dress pattern Simplicity 2282.

The simpler version minus pocket flaps or peplum was cut, with a few alterations made to the pattern. These included widening (by 12cm) and lowering (by 5cm) the neckline as well as redrafting the facings to fit. Georgia said there was far too much fullness in the head of the cap sleeves so instead she used the cap sleeves from New Look 6824 pattern (without ease).

The dress bodice was a little long in the body so Georgia took out 1.5cm at the waist. In order to eliminate some fullness at the waist (created by the pleats being folded outwards), she instead alternated the pleats to fold inwards creating a simple solution to the problem!

A fabulous dress for this fabulous fabric which also comes in a Navy/Ivory colourway.

...and the fabric is our linen/viscose White Check (also available in black at our Melbourne store only). I finished the sleeves off with a simple gathered lace trim.

Pattern Review - Simplicity 2363

Without fail for the last couple of years, customers ask me about suitable summer maxi dress patterns. Here's one I really like at the moment- Simplicity 2363.

I think this pattern ticks all the boxes, particularly because the dress isn't too voluminous, has side pockets, a really flattering bodice plus there are long/shorter length and sleeve/sleeveless options as well. The only tricky part to this pattern is in the armhole to bodice area, getting this finished neatly is a must!

Vintage Simplicity 7798

As a follow up to yesterday's post, here's a little more about my party frock. I've had a shift dress on my mind for a while now and then I saw this pic of Gwyneth Paltrow in a trash mag and really, really loved the colour and simplicity.

The pattern stash yielded this vintage number - Simplicity 7798 - and the fabric I chose was Red Crystalline (but really more of a burnt orange), a fabulous rayon/polyamide/spandex ponti knit.

As with most vintage patterns, there were a few alterations to be made. I lopped heaps off the length (nothing unusual there) and needed to take in the side and shoulder seams. Zip was eliminated (bonus!), sleeves were shortened, and I lowered the neckline because I'm not so much into the turtleneck thing, especially in spring time.

I hadn't planned on adding buttons, but these bronze-y ones worked perfectly and the dress felt rather plain without it.

Having never sewn them before, I must say I'm rather partial to the elbow darts...

Eclectic Fever

Whilst I'm putting the finishing touches on my party dress, here are a couple of great creations from the same Italian cotton - Eclectic Blue and Pink.

Georgia made up a peasant skirt. The fitted yoke was cut from this pattern with three tiers added for the skirt. The first tier is a rectangle cut up the full width of the fabric (140cm wide), the second tier is two rectangles the full width and the last tier is 3 rectangles. With approx 4.20mtrs of Black Pom Pom Bubble Trim added to the hem of the skirt.

Then there's this sweet a-line dress made up by Kristin (from Vancouver, Canada) for her etsy store - Mette.

Hello Tessuti!

It's Laura Keogh. I won the little black dress section of the Tessuti Awards last year. I spent 2 amazing weeks in New York, I saw the sights, went to all the vintage markets I could find and met some amazing people. I just wanted to tell you how grateful I am for that opportunity. I'm sort of still on my NY trip, after 2 weeks in NY I flew to London, travelled around Europe and now I'm living in London for 6 months working as a studio assistant at a fashion label, and it was all thanks to the Tessuti Awards for getting me here!

I've attached a photo of NY at night taken from waters edge in Brooklyn and one of me on the Brooklyn Bridge.

The winner for this year looks amazing, she will have the time of her life in New York like I did.

Pattern Review - Mission Maxi Dress in Funky Army

I spotted this here, on our Tessuti Creations Group Pool over on Flickr! Talented Belinda from Perth has made up the Mission Maxi pattern in our Italian Viscose/Elastane Funky Army and trimmed the neckline and armholes in our Mokuba fold-over stretch binding in Black. So simple and stylish.

I've had my eye on Jamie Christina Design - Mission Maxi pattern for a while, having seen lovely creations from it here and here. The pattern is a simple free flowing maxi dress for jersey knits with three different options for a razor back, halter back or back godet detail.

Pattern Review - Vogue 8351

At this moment, available online and at all Tessuti stores are loads of fabulous printed viscose/elastane jerseys picked up on our travels to Italy and Germany. They are truly lovely and ideal for easy pull on summer dresses, maxi skirts, tank and tunic tops.

One such print is Citrus Blocks seen here made up by Georgia. The pattern used was pull-over empire line dress Vogue 8351. This easy pattern is out of print but can still be found here on this site.

This particular pattern is a favourite of Georgia's and get's used often. In this version View A was cut with cowl-neck view B bodice and the only alteration Georgia made was to add a neck bind onto the back neck edge.

Chopstick Bloom(ing lovely...)

As a panacea to the ~~agony~~ challenge that is the midway (read: hard) part of this pattern, I decided Vogue 1175 and I needed time apart and some instant sewing gratification was in order. Cue the kind of fabric that you're not exactly sure what to do with but must have. For me, that was Chopstick Bloom. Total love-at-first-fabric-sight*.

Given the fact that it's sold as a panel - and a narrow one at that - I wasn't immediately sure how I'd make it up. But with the combined summer-y forecast and the need for a quick and easy project, I eventually settled on a simple tunic top. The design is modified from pattern G in Stylish Dress Book 2.

In deciding to feature the awesome digital design on just one side of the top, I ended up buying two panels in order to get the match and desired effect. I used our cotton Mokuba grosgrain for the straps, shortened so that I could wear a strapless bra.

Because I wanted a snugger fit, I chose not to add seam allowances and took in the underarm seams by an extra 2cm. I also added an invisible zip in the left seam. If I made it again, I'd probably add bust darts but otherwise, I'm very happy with the result.

Now that the weather is warming up, I'm doing that new season thing where I look in the wardrobe and think 'geez, what did I wear last summer!?' Do you do that with the change of seasons? Cue summer sewing - my very, favourite kind...

*granted, that happens a LOT in my job...

Pattern Review - OOP New Look 6751

I just had to post about this dress, for a couple of reasons.

Firstly to show this great dress Libby created using OOP New Look 6751 in our 100% Japanese cotton pinwale cord Domo Grape (sold out).

It's a great pattern for those of you who prefer the high waisted dress style. Regarding the pattern, Libby says she toiled it up in calico first to make sure that the neckline didn't gape. She didn't like the look of the darts under the bust – as they were very wide they ended up quite pointy when sewn together. So when sewing the dress up in the corduroy, she eliminated the darts by gathering there instead. After making the dress up Libby was still not entirely happy as the area under the bust looked a little saggy! Intent on perfecting this pattern and having a wearable dress, Libby unpicked the bodice again (piping and all) and took some over-shaping under the old dart. It did the trick and now this altered pattern's ready to be made up again in future.

The dress neckline facing and seam under the bust is piped in lovely Mokuba piping in silver grey. This piping is also available in a range of colours.

Secondly, was to remind us that Libby turned up to work that day, in her lovely creation with mismatched boots!!!! Made even funnier, was the fact that Libby looked at herself in the mirror before leaving home and wondered if she should wear flats instead and that her son didn't notice when he gave her a lift to the station. Only realising when she sat on the train!!!!

In true gorgeous Libby style she soldiered on all day in her boots and only one customer noticed! A very funny day indeed!

Sprite A-line ponti knit dress

Georgia's back with a fab new a-line dress made up in Sprite- Ponti Knit (more stock due in Mid Nov). This fantastic stretch double knit now comes in these great new shades. Not only does it work well in jackets, skirts, pants and dresses, it also sews up like a dream.

Georgia used OOP Vogue 9237 as her block for this dress. Re pattern adjustments, the bust/back darts and back zipper were eliminated, the neckline widened and self binding used on the neckline, armhole and hem. Georgia added in a seam an inch above her waistline and added a inverted pleat above and below this seam for a little detail and extra fit. Simple!

Julia's response to winning the Tessuti Awards

Pattern Review - Vogue 8548

Whilst this weather still can't make up it's mind, and we have a wet week ahead! It's still appropriate to post about coats! So here is a fabulous pattern review on Vogue 8548 from Tracy, an online customer from Perth.

Remember the Diana mannequin you organised for me? (My cat Trixie loved the packaging so much.) I thought I'd show you one of the first things I made with the dress forms help: Vogue 8548, a beautiful retro-futuristic coat, that could be inspired by the cult TV series "UFO"!

I took my time to incorporate little tailoring things like padding the sleeve heads and making bound buttonholes. This Primaluna Fuchsia fabric was gorgeous to work with. I've worn the coat twice, and although it might be getting a little warm to wear it now, I doubt I'll ever tire of it!

I thought it wise to make a muslin for such a project (although I then had moments of doubt, as it looked almost Lab-coat in calico!). I cut a size 8-10 in View A, tapering in a little more at the waist and centre back after making the muslin. I cut the sleeves to about bracelet length, tapered sleeve fullness a little while retaining the distinctive flare, and added a third buttonhole above the bust for a more secure closure.

The lining instructions involved a lot of hand-sewing, so as advised by a sewer on SewingPatternReview, I bagged the lining (I made the entire lining & coat separately, then machine-sewed together in one seam from left front to right front bottom edges).

I referred heaps to my Nana's Readers Digest sewing 'Bible' regarding tailoring a coat: I padded the sleeve heads, added stabilising to the hem, and used the 'windowpane' technique for my bound buttonholes (my favourite method). Self-covered buttons add a retro touch - making these required some brute strength from my husband Paul! (the pattern did not require these steps, but I felt the extra time would be worth it.)

This was one of the most challenging thing I've made, but so much easier now that I have the Diana dress form to work with (thanks Tessuti!). I love the funnel neckline (not that it's for everyone). This fuchsia is one of my favourite colours, perfect for a hit of vivid colour to lift winter black, and the fabric is just beautiful..

Lord Paisley Blue Men's Shirt

It's not unusual to catch Matthew walking in and out of the Tessuti Sydney stores wearing one of his signature bright or large print shirts, looking great I might add! So it's a long time coming to have Matthew featured on the blog.

Every now and then when Matthew needs to update his shirt collection, he simply drops off a pile of shirt lengths to a local tailor, who has a shirt block that Matthew favours and voilà, this fabulous men's shirt made up in Lord Paisley Blue, some available at Tessuti Melbourne and available in Pink.

The new arrivals of Japanese Pattern books should be in store next week, including this Men's Shirt Pattern Book.

SLEEVE WORKSHOP - BRING IN YOUR SLEEVE PROBLEM!
Saturday 12 November 11am-1:30 ($60)

This workshop will begin with a demonstration and you will then be assisted to set in a sleeve from a project of your own. A calico sleeve and garment section from the same pattern used in the demonstration class can be used if you do not have a current sleeve project. Along with your problem sleeve, you will need to bring pins, handsewing needle/s, thread and scissors.

MODIFICATION OF A COMMERCIAL PATTERN TO FIT YOUR
INDIVIDUAL BODY SHAPE
Saturday 19th November 11am-3pm ($80)

To prepare for the workshop you will need to cut out your pattern (perhaps it will be one that you have previously used and know that it needs some work). If you are in doubt make sure the size you cut is too big rather than too small. Cut a calico (or scrap fabric) garment from this pattern. Do not cut pockets, facings or sleeves but bring the entire pattern to the workshop. Sew the calico together using a big stitch and even a contrasting thread so that seams can be unpicked quickly if necessary.

Please be aware that the fitting of your calico will take place in the shop during business hours so that you wear a close fitting t-shirt and leggings if your calico won’t cover as much as you would like.

As well as your calico and pattern you will need pins, measuring tape, ruler, sharp pencil, eraser, paper scissors, fabric scissors, magic or sticky tape, needle and thread. If you have a grading ruler, tracing wheel or coloured texta pens these can be helpful.

Pattern Review - Vintage McCalls 9028

While we're on the topic of pants, here's a plaid pair made up by Adrienne from vintage McCalls 9028 in Tessuti's 100% Wool Red Tartan (sold out).

After a couple of mock ups in calico and one in a poly/viscose check, Adrienne finally got the fit on these pants spot on!

Pattern Review - Burdastyle Cropped Pants #111B

I made up Burda Style 02/2010 Cropped Pants #111B in Stretch Cotton - Red for Gabby this week. Regarding alterations to this pattern, I cut in the legs at the side seam down a size but think I can bring these pants down another size for her. I plan to try out some more pattern tweeking on another pair in a stretch gingham similar to the pants in this image (below).

This fabulous stretch woven is also available in Turquoise Blue, Oregano Green, Burnt Orange and Pale Yellow.

Since featuring Simplicity 2588 in a couple of posts here and here, we've had loads of interest in this pattern even Georgia couldn't resist!

The more popular flared skirt option was used and made up in pretty printed 100% cotton 'Painted Rose' from a couple of summers ago (sold out). The only alteration to the pattern was the addition of a self bow placed centre front on the waist seam.

When it comes to my personal fashion preference - or, more specifically, the colour of it - I worship at the altar of black. Always have, always will. For me, it's very much what I love to wear, what I'm comfortable in and what I'm invariably drawn to. Oh yes, and it goes ever so well with the rest of my wardrobe.

And so, this latest creation is about as far, far away from my colour comfort zone as I've ever ventured. Inspired by the 5 year old stepboy's birthday party theme - Loud Shirts and Thongs* - I quickly made this top in the preceding nights for I literally (thongs excepted) had not a thing to wear.

The pattern is Vintage Butterick 9582, View D. Top front is Magenta Zin, and the back is Manderin Zin - both 100% linen. And for extra "loud", I decided to add our wool/cotton/nylon trim (I.T Trim 3 - available all stores) because it was the perfect match for both colours. And if you look really, really hard, there's a little bit of black in there.

I might just have to have another sewing go at this colour blocking thing. It's really hard to resist the incredibly vibrant and clashy spring/summer colours out there. Are you a fan?

Suzie's Modified New York Cape

Take a look at Suzie's modified version of our New York Cape pattern. It's fabulous!

Suzie lengthened the cape, added great wool bound patch pockets and extra width to the cape. About the alterations Suzie says:

"I added pockets to mine - just simple shapes also bound in wool before being sewn on - and lengthened the cape overall by about 8cm which gives a much better line on me.

I did a full bust adjustment to accommodate my more ample bosom. This also gave me a smidge more room to move. I tried on a sample of the cape made directly to the pattern size and while it fit me, it wasn't as loose as I felt it should be. I slashed open the front piece through the centre of the dart and straight to the bottom hem and then opened the pattern out by about 1.5cm. I also dropped the dart finish point by 2cm for a smoother taper. I didn't open out the back, but since my bottom is also ample, I pivoted the back pattern piece out from the fold at the hem line by about 1.5 cm - this meant the neck line wasn't altered but the bottom hems matched. Very happy with how it all turned out - I'd definitely make this again".

Pattern Review - McCalls 6162

Graphic Artist, Alex joined our Sew Inn classes a few months ago, to brush up on her sewing skills and to make a fabulous dress for an upcoming wedding she was going to.

With McCalls 6162 pattern in mind Alex chose this printed Cotton/Elastane Sateen 'Red Lippy' (sold out - but available at Tessuti Chatswood in Possum Grey). Alex made up View C and this is what she had to say about the pattern:

"With regard to alterations, I had to adjust the bodice slightly - bring this in at the sides, increase the darts and take some off the bottom of the bodice so the waist sat correctly. I also shortened the shoulder details by about 1cm so I wasn't channeling the 80's too much (been there done that!) "

Alex loved working with this beautiful stretch woven:

" I think it was perfect for this project and is just sits so well - plus the print hides all my sewing sins :-)

I have to say I had a great time at the Sew Inn and feel I have a new found confidence in tackling sewing projects!"

An apron for the father on Father's Day

Last Christmas, I gifted the good fella with a barbecue. At that time, I had intended on making an apron to go along with it but (insert various excuse/s)...
Fast forward eight months and it's done, fortuitously, for Father's Day.

The pattern came via this Martha Stewart link and is brought to you by the clever ladies at Ink and Spindle. It's quick, easy and such a great gift. I got each of the kids to draw ("Something simple!! Something simple!!") on the pocket which I then stitched over on the machine.

I can't remember which denim I chose, but it's a midweight. The lining is our 100% cotton shirting Baby Brokeback.

Happy Father's Day Jules. I do so hope that when you wear this with jeans, your desire to don the double denim is somewhat sated.

2011 Tessuti Awards - And the finalists are....

What a response! With 218 entries (well, WELL up on last years final tally of 98!), this years Tessuti Awards have been fantastically embraced by both entrants and viewers alike. Thanks to all of you who - with passion, inspiration and creativity - embraced the theme and took on the challenge that was this years theme of linen and lace.

Pattern Review - Simplicity 2584

Here's a new tunic top I finished last week made up in paisley print 100% Cotton Thinking Man's Blue and Cynthia Rowley's Simplicity pattern 2584 - I cut view A as top, and I'm glad that I tested the pattern out first in a lining to check the fit!!! I initially cut the size 12, but had to add at least two sizes to the width around the hips and bust as the pattern runs very small here. The shoulders are as the original size 12.

I made small changes to the pattern, firstly adding a 20mm self casing around the outer top to encase a narrow self drawstring. I also raised the front slit by about 3cm and instead of gathering the bias cut sleeve frill to a facing attached to the bottom of the sleeve as per pattern instructions, I omitted the sleeve facing and simply gathered the frill to the sleeve and the bottom frill edge falls loosely. I think this gives a much nicer effect and leaves out a lot of bulk and unnecessary sewing!

I'm really happy with the way the top has turned out, it was perfect for an outing down to beautiful Bondi Beach today to celebrate Father's Day. I'm planning a dress version of this in another lovely paisley cotton Bourton Wine next. Stay tuned for that one!

Pattern Review - (Unknown brand) Vintage pattern 4902

Georgia picked up this vintage pattern in Vinnies recently. It has no date or brand on it, only that it was printed in the US. My guess is that it's from the 30s or 40s. What do you think?

Georgia made the pattern up in Japanese 100% cotton Navy Hanataba. The dress was cut as per pattern, the only adjustments made were to shorten the sleeves to 3/4 length, eliminating the centre front fold and instead of a self belt to draw in the dress, Georgia added a self casing to just above the waist with self drawstring. Interestingly the original pattern came in half sizes?

One thing we do know about this pattern is that this 14 and a half is closer to today's standard size 10 measurements!

Pattern Review - New Look 6808

New Tessuti Chatswood staff member Libby was spotted (!!!) in this top made up in Japanese 100% cotton Multi Yuki (sold out) in View C from New Look 6808 top pattern. The only changes Libby made was to shorten the length and take in the shoulder seam at the neck edge. A definite hit in the store last weekend and Libby says she has plans to use this pattern again.

Lovelace dress for Claudia

I made this lace dress up for Claudia to wear to a wedding on the weekend, as there's a serious lack of suitable special occasion dresses for 12 year olds!!!

The dress was simple and very quick to make. For the bodice, I basted 100% Nylon two-tone chantilly lace 'Lovelace' onto 'Rosa Pink' silk satin and gathered the lace and a slightly less gathered silk satin together for the skirt. The armholes and neckline are trimmed with black silk georgette and to highlight the trim I added a black belt made from our lovely soft Mokuba grosgrain ribbon range.

To be honest Claudia's dress was inspired by these cute ballet style shoes!

Chambray Ruffled Skirt

Check out this darling raw edge ruffled skirt made up in 100% Cotton Chambray Japanese Ocean over at Wink Designs.

Sydney mum, Marina made use of the yarn-dyed nature of the cotton by leaving the ruffle hem edges raw, creating a contrasting edge and securing the frayed edges with a contrast zig zag top stitch.

It's these little details that make all the difference!

Kristy's TNT Dress - New Look 6968

This great dress caught my eye over at Lower Your Presser Foot. Kristy made up our lovely textured printed Japanese cotton (out of stock), which she had tucked away in her fabric stash! New Look 6968 pattern was used and Kristy managed to get the dress out of 1mtr of fabric (112cm wide) ...incredible no?

A definite winner!

Here's another great project from Lynette. Aside from the style itself, what's not to love about the words 'pussy bow blouse'? The pattern is the recently OOP McCall's 5884 - View C.
Lyn made no alterations but did say that if she was to make it up again, she would take some volume out of the sleeves.

It's smart and pretty without being too girly. Her fabric choice - Jolly Rogers Green - also gives the garment just a little more edge.

Cue inner pirate, in a gloriously subtle kinda way...

Cindy sent me more lovely images of her children wearing Tessuti creations made up from Japanese pattern books. For Imogen, Liberty Lantana cotton/wool Junya Shirako Pink was chosen to make up a pretty smock dress - Pattern E from Happy Homemade Kids Vol.2. Cindy cut the 110cm size for Imogen, who is turning 5 this month. This sweet dress is trimmed with black/white gingham binding trim and hot pink topstitching. Cindy also made up a little pair of pants for Ethan in a black wool and cotton denim that she bought last year from Tessuti Chatswood. This fabric washes really well and looks adorable with his old man cardi from Seed. The pant pattern is from Simple Sewing For Baby by Lotta Jansdotta, which is full of very cute and simple patterns for babies.
