Pattern Review - Simplicity 3877 without godets

Here's another finished garment made in last Saturday's Sew Inn class. This easy and perfect summer dress - Simplicity 3877 - was made by Margaret in our Italian 100% cotton lawn 'Etro Bluebells' (sold out)

Margaret chose View D but didn't want the fullness in the skirt created by eight godets! Instead, Georgia showed her how to eliminate them from the pattern which created a simpler a-line skirt and eliminated a lot of sewing fuss. The only other alteration made was to lengthen the bodice to accommodate Margaret's longer torso.

I must say I prefer this style without the godets. What do you think? I'm pretty sure Margaret was also thrilled with the end result. How could I tell? In no time Margaret was slipping into it and wearing it out the door! Now any sewer knows that's a very good sign.

Note: Here's a handy tutorial if you like the added fullness created by godets.

  2. Looks great without the godets! And a great fit too, which demonstrates that it's definitely worth the effort of adjusting patterns to get the fit you want!!

  3. I also have this pattern. I wouldn't have thought of eliminating the godets but I like what Margaret has achieved, so I might have to give it a try. Thanks for the idea!

  4. Ditto on the pattern, untouched for now, especially since it's colder than last night's coffee. But I like the idea of skipping the godets.

  5. As it seems that the godets ARE the dress, I don't understand why a simple A line dress wasn't picked at the start. Wouldn't that have been easier?

I'm not a big fan of godets myself.

As long as the customer is happy.

  6. Anonymous, I think it is more about using a pattern you have to create a different look, instead of buying another pattern. At least, that's what it is about for me.
