NEW :: Helga Shirt Pattern

Meet Helga - our latest Tessuti pattern! About ten weeks ago we put up this photo (below) of Helga on Instagram
Helga (the customer - not the shirt ;-) had taken her pattern - modified to suit her shape - from an original Silva design that she'd purchased in one of her boutiques many, many years ago. And this shirt was the beautiful result. After publishing the photo, we had SO many requests for the pattern that we decided to answer the call. So here she is, named after our inspiration (of course!).

This oversized shirt is a winning combination of loose, comfortable and stylish. The pattern includes two options - collarless (View A) and mandarin-style collar (View B).
Helga Shirt in Black Crush
Features include a swing back and side seams that angle to the front and finish with a clever stepped hem.
The shirt can be easily dresssed up or down, and looks great with both skinny or wide legged pants. Suitable fabrics for the Helga Shirt include linen, cotton, lightweight wool, wool crepe and firmer silks (e.g. dupion and taffeta).
Our Helga Shirt pattern comes with all sizes (AUS sizing) XXS, XS, S, M, L and XL included.
Due to the width of the back pattern piece, only sizes XXS, XS and S can be cut out on narrow width fabrics (112cm)

The pattern is now available in both hardcopy and PDF print-at-home/copy shop versions and pattern includes Australian sizes XXS through to XL.

  2. I like this pattern , I am wondering how it is different to your JAC shirt and also if it is easy to lengthen by cutting horizontally across the pattern and spreading the desired amount . It doesn't look as if I could just add onto the bottom because of diagonal seam line at the front and side .

    1. Hi Mem. The block/shape is different, as well as the collar/neckline. The split hem detail is similar. You'd have to try lengthening as you've suggested

  3. Is "hard copy" a printed paper patter? If not, do you plan on printing it? Thanks!

  5. What suggestions do you have for larger sizes and need for wider than 112 cm fabric? Piecing 112 cm wide fabric if it doesn't impact fabric pattern? I'm new to site and just downloaded Robbie pants. Love Helga Shirt.

    1. Hi Fran. You can use fabrics widths 135cm-150cm.

    2. Hi Fran. I have made the Helga. You can add a seam to centre back or you could cut the back at 90 degrees. You will need a bit extra fabric length

  6. Hi Sue here, I am in the process of making Helga with a firm cotton and I am finding the back is puking out a lot more than I am happy with. Granted I have a rounded back which won't be helping but has anyone got any tips on how to fix this ? I don't want to give up on the pattern yet. Thanks

  7. Hi Sue,
If you are using a firm cotton this will cause the back to stick out due to the silhouette of the shirt and a combination of a rounded back will not help. The only thing you can do now to save the shirt is to add a back seam where you will need to pivot some shaping out. You will need to take more fabric out at the hemline and taper to nothing towards your rounded back. Pin it similar to a dart to tell you how much to take out.
    all the best

    1. Thanks I have done just as you say and its worked well. I am assuming if I make it in a drapy fabric or a soft linen I will be OK as makeing a dart in the back will take it off grain,?? Cheers Sue

    2. Hi Sue,

No you can still pivot out some fullness from the hemline and still retain the correct grainline of the back. If you want to do this you will need to do it on your back pattern piece, by slashing up the centre back and taking equal amount from either side of cb to nothing up top.
